Usery Mountain Park, Tonto National Forest (April 30, 2005)

Usery Mountain Park, Tonto National Forest, April 30, 2005

Desert Tortoise
Back in April of 2003, before I lived in Arizona, I flew out to Phoenix to visit Mom and Dad. One morning we went hiking at Usery Mountain Park, about a mile from the home that they were building in east Mesa. I ditched Mom and Dad and scoured the washes in the park for herps. I found a desert tortoise in one of them. Two years later, almost to the day, I hiked back out to that same wash again. I am not going to assume that this is the same one, but I found a tortoise once again, within a few yards of where I had found one two years earlier. This time, I was armed with a video camera.

17th Annual Ostrich Festival (March 12, 2005)

Ostrich Festival
Ostrich Races
Back in January I learned about an ostrich festival held each year in Chandler. Intrigued, I marked my calendar and anxiously waited for March to come around. I discovered that thousands of others had the same idea I had - causing traffic problems within a two mile radius of the fairgrounds. Everywhere you looked there were carnival rides, games, food vendors, and souvenir stalls. I had 20 minutes to find the ostrich races. The place was packed. It was a sea of people shoulder to shoulder trying to get a good look. Most gave up trying to find an empty seat on the bleachers. Turns out, it was more than just ostrich racing. Zebras, llamas, camels, and horses were included as well. Very entertaining!

New Year's Celebration in Heber, Utah (December 30, 2004 - January 2, 2005)

Day Three - Sledding
Sledding
Heather and Laura spent part of one morning behind the cabin sledding...or at least trying to. I was filming them from the loft (aka game room) on the third floor. Heather spotted me after a few minutes, and the two exacted their revenge.

Day Three - Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling
I wanted to get some snowmobiling footage, so when Mark and Greg took the snowmobiles out for a ride one morning, I hopped on. Please remember that the air is much thinner up in the mountains. It will make even the craziest person act a little crazier.

Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo
Well, Daddy didn't take me to the zoo, I took myself. Though Mommy did take me to this zoo once when she visited in 2001. Actually, I took her. Okay, regardless of how I got there or who took whom, I did go to the zoo, zoo, zoo.

St. Louis Zoo (April 3-4, 2004)

St. Louis Zoo, Missouri, April 2004
The Hustle
After I decided to move to Phoenix, I made it a priority to visit the zoo in St. Louis several more times that spring. This is my favorite zoo for several reasons :the setting - it's part of Forest Park, one of the country's largest urban parks (nearly twice as large as Central Park in New York); admission is free; lots of free parking; creative layout of the exhibits - the animals seem so accessible!; beautiful landscaping; wide variety of animals... the list goes on! I really miss this zoo!

Bald Eagles (January 11, 2004)

Morning Mood
Every winter, from December to February, bald eagles come to Alton and Grafton (Illinois). Both towns sit alongside the Mississippi River, and people from all over cruise up and down the Great River Road (which runs parallel to the river), occasionally pulling over to admire the birds.

I videotaped some of the eagles, then edited the video and asked Mark to choose some good eagle music. The song being played is Morning Mood, composed by Grieg, from the opera Peer Gynt. No doubt many of you have heard the song before. Mark couldn't have chosen a better song, it fits the video perfectly!
